Spinnakers
provide the horsepower for downwind sailing. There are two basic
types of spinnakers, the symmetrical spinnaker and asymmetric
spinnaker. The symmetrical spinnaker is the "traditional"
spinnaker used for most downwind sailing. The symmetrical spinnaker
requires the use of a spinnaker pole and multiples control lines,
typically a foreguy, afterguy, topping lift, sheet and of course
- halyard.
The
asymmetric spinnaker does not require the use of a spinnaker
pole which in essence means a reduction in control lines. This
in effect creates a much easier sail to set and strike. The
asymmetric spinnaker is in high demand by the cruising community
due to its ease of use.
